It's pretty big thing here in Finland, since Russia is next to us. So let's see what happens.

This situation has the potential to get pretty hot if accords aren't set soon. I'm hoping people will keep a close eye on it, though so far it's been grossly overshadowed by the Olympics and (US) domestic situations.

Quite the opposite - the Olympics, even if were watched by 4blns of people, were overshadowed by the war. And, in Poland and Czech, by a terrible train accident.

Well the Georgian leader has a good reputation in the eyes of the western countries. He also wants to join NATO, which is a big problem for Russia. Of course the Georgians say that they only returned fire when the Russians and the Russian backed separatists opened fire first, so who knows. Of course the Russians say their "peace keeping force" was attacked by the Georgians, first of all basically all the separatists have Russian passports (the BBC confirmed it).

Sooooo nobody rly knows what happened.

This is why I said the situation can get hot. Yes, Georgia and Russia have been at odds for the past few years, but never to this scale.

Oh, and in my little slice of the world, hardly anyone is talking about this...which is a shame. Granted, the farming community probably just thinks Georgia is a state.

This is yet another potentially bloody little war in the futile Russian attempt to keep their "empire" (which failed about 20 years ago) together. I regret to say, that this is probably not the last of these conflicts we will see in the years to come.

I hope international pressure can get the two parties to sit down and find some sort of accord, before we see massive bloodshed.

I think Russia should be banned from the next winter and summer olympics (if not more) for breaking from the traditions of the games. At the least they could have waited 2 weeks to attack.

Yeah, like this is the only conflict currently in action in the world.

This issue seems pretty complicated, Georgia was invading South Ossetia which was revolting against Georgia (an autonomous part of the country? Not quite sure) with Russian citizens living there who were killed, so Russia retaliated. Not going to pick sides here since information seems pretty confused at the moment.

I don't know if war was a necessity, but people seem pretty quick to overlook the fact Georgians were killing civilians first.

Well judging by Russia's current nation strength it's not that strong. I still doubt if Georgia can hold out before they go to the negotiation table, but there's a chance Georgia will pull a Finland.

Another thing, I think the Georgians are telling the truth that the Russians attacked first.

1. The tension between those 2 countries are high, with NATO and EU.
2. Despite Russia's weaknesses, it's still a force to be reckoned with.
3. A direct attack on Russia is suicide, not even the US or China dare to attack.
4. Majority of the people in the breakaway territory have Russian passports.

South Ossetia wants to be independent, and it probably have Russian support, since of course Russia wants to sabotage Georgia's attempt in trying to get in NATO and the EU. Think about it, even today Russian won't and can't let Georgia join NATO.

Nobody claimed Georgia attacked Russia, rather that Russian citizens were killed in South Ossetia.

And of course Russia is going to swing huge force at this, I'd be very surprised if the aims weren't partially to show the world that Russia is still a global power.

I don't suppose we have anyone from these regions who can provide some better information?

If I remember, in 1939 when German attacked Poland, they said that they are only defending their borders, because apparently Poland "attacked" them. The truth was, Germans sabotaged THEIR OWN buildings, they used their soldiers disguised as Polish soldiers. False flag's politic.

Neither of the sides want to look like the aggressor. Both will claim they are defending, although Georgia pretty much doesn't stand a chance.

Are you literally trying to imply Russia staged the attack on South Ossetia that killed Russian citizens, among thousands of civilians?

No doubt both sides are upscaling the provocations that led to conflict, though. I don't know how reliable reports are on Russian peacekeepers being killed are, etc, but war is pretty confusing.
